“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”Albert Einstein
The Voice Inside of Our Head
Failure. One of the scariest and most emotionally charged words in the English language. It seems to follow us around, like a shadow, whispering sweet nothings into our ear.
“Don’t try that or your will fail”, it says. “What if you fail, what will everyone think?” “You’re a failure, nothing you do will ever be successful.” “Don’t fail!” It might add as you walk out the door.
Thank you for your kind optimism, failure, but I think I’ll take a different approach.
What if I told you failure doesn’t exist? Would you believe me? Would you think I’m crazy?
You see, failure is a state of mind. And if you can eliminate this state of mind from your own thinking, then failure will disappear, immediately.
“Failure” is defined in the dictionary as a “lack of success.” To understand this, we must then also understand what success is. And boy do we all have different takes on that word.
The Meaning of Success
For me, learning is success. Growing is success. Reorganizing, pivoting, refining, transforming, are all different forms of success.
Thus, when you attempt something, and it doesn’t quite work out as planned, or your desired result did not come about, then what? This is the moment where success and failure exist or cease to exist.
As you look back at something that didn’t go as planned, what did you learn? Could you do things differently? Do you need to go back to the practice room and work harder? Do you need to rethink things in a completely different way? Do you need to pivot and refine your talents toward a different task or goal?
If you ask these questions, sincerely, and seek the answers to them, then failure cannot exist. Why? Because you are learning. You are growing. You are refining your skills, approach, and process. These are all forms of success, and in the definition of above, success cannot exist simultaneously with failure.
Get In The Arena
We are all going to fall short of some goals, plans, or results at times in our lives. There are so many factors that are beyond our control, things will always go off course at some level. It’s also true that sometimes we don’t practice and prepare as we should. That’s on us. Will we take that information and work harder, smarter, better? If so, then we didn’t fail, we just learned how to be more successful.
The only way to truly fail is to not even try. To let fear of failure keep you from following your dreams or attempting something amazing is the only way failure can win. Otherwise it has no place to call home.
So go for it! Get in the arena and take action. Then, look back at what happened and see what you can learn, what you can do to improve. This path will lead you to success, greatness, and most of all, happiness.
Leave failure for all those others who never even take one step toward a dream.
Enjoy the Ride!
