The Easy Guide to Block AI Data Training

The Easy Guide to Block AI Data Training

Whether you love or hate AI, your data is being used to train AI. Big Tech has this feature turned on by default in a lot of places. Here's a quick guide on how to limit some of them.

Twitter/X

Elon's app has a built-in AI chatbot called Grok (Premium subscribers only). Even if you're not using it, your posts are being used to train the AI.

You'll need to turn this off manually because it's enabled by default. Also, you have to log in on a web browser; you can't change these settings on your phone.

  • Click “Privacy and safety"
  • Click "Privacy and safety" again
  • Scroll down to “Data sharing and personalization”
  • Click “Grok”
  • Uncheck the box that says “Allow your posts as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning”

Meta (Facebook)

Unfortunately, American Facebook or Instagram users don't have an easy way to opt-out feature to prevent Meta from using their data for AI training.

There is a form available, but approval is subject to your state's privacy laws.

But you can take some simple steps to limit your data's exposure. Your profile should be private, first and foremost. This reduces how much Meta can learn from your posts.

Take advantage of the "activity off Meta" option. This shows your recent activity, as well as apps and sites that share data with Meta. You can disable any current or future activity.

And be sure to delete personal information from chats in Facebook Messenger. You can also "mute" Meta AI from showing up in your feed or chat.

Websites

AI-powered web scraping can cause some potential challenges and risks. There are increased privacy concerns and potential copyright infringement.

Excessive web scraping can strain website resources and slow down the experience.

If you want to limit your site from being web-scraped, there are tools available to prevent this.

Have I Been Trained is a service that allows people to see if their creations have been used for web scraping, and then opt out of future training.

The website is more of a search engine, but there is a browser extension that lets you opt out of any media type.

Wrapping Up

Be sure to log into your X profile on the desktop to disable Grok training with your data.

If you don't want to click through menus on Facebook or Instagram, keeping things, private is a great start.

You can check images on any portion of your website with Have I Been Trained. Add the browser extension for other types of media.
