I recently turned 43, and that’s got me in an introspective mood lately. Even though I still feel young, strong, and vibrant, I’ve realized that I’ve been around long enough to gather some valuable wisdom and insights. If I knew that today were my last day on Earth, what learnings would I impart to humanity before I left?
I’ve found that the truth in life lies mostly in its contradictions and dichotomies. Rarely black and white, wisdom is found often in the gray areas. Subtle, shifting, evolving, gems of knowledge sparkle with light from the depths of the darkness. I hope these insights bring you value and a perspective that helps you in your own adventure. Let’s dive in!
Listen to Your Inner Voice
There is a deeply imbedded voice in the farthest reaches of your spirit. It knows exactly what is best for you and what decisions to make along the way. Starting out, we often can’t hear it over the noise of distractions and the loud shouting of society. This voice could also be called intuition, or that “gut feeling”. The more you listen and act on what it says, the louder it speaks. And the more you move in accordance with this voice, the more in balance, fulfilled, and free you will become.
Seek God
I’ve traveled all over the world, and one thing I continually find everywhere I go is a constant yearning of humans to reach God. This means different things to different people, but in essence, I think we are all after the same thing. Life is so vast, so full of joy and sorrow, and so mysterious. Underneath it all lies a patchwork of spiritual magic. Continue to explore and search for that connection, extending the principles of love, kindness, and honesty, and rising up in spiritual evolution.
Play
Are you having enough fun? If life gets too serious, it starts to become a drag. While we grapple with the realities of life and death, remember to go out and play with wild abandon. That might be a game of basketball, a musical instrument, dance, painting, or just rolling in the grass with your child or dog. These moments release you from the weight of your mind, and just let you be. A consistent practice of play throughout your life will keep you young and vibrant for many many years.
Travel the World
Some of my most incredible breakthroughs, insights, and spiritual moments have happened when I’ve been exploring the world through travel. I created a project called Banjo Earth that takes me around the planet playing music, and sharing the stories and cultures that make us human. Traveling in an uncomfortable place, where you don’t know the language, especially alone, can teach you more about yourself in one week than years at home. Travel has the incredible ability to broaden your perspective and give you a massive amount of empathy for humanity.
Stack Cash
There are many things more important than money in this world, but that doesn’t mean it should be disregarded. Money equals freedom. The more money you accrue, the more freedom you have access to. You don’t have to be a billionaire, but a certain amount of wealth gives you options. I used to live week to week as an artist. This was fun, but stressful. It’s hard to do any of the above activities if you are worried about paying your phone bill or putting gas in your car.
Learn business, marketing, investing, and save some money. When you do spend it, trade it for experiences instead of things that lose value. Invest in yourself and your businesses. Be generous with your success. Money is meant to move and flow. It is energy created by value. Respect it, and it will respect you.
Keep Moving Forward
That’s all for now, my friends. I’m excited to see what the next 43 years have in store. I will continue to have an open mind and spirit, and constantly push for learning and expanding my perspective. I hope this article has helped you find a sparkle of insight glimmering from your own depths, and inspires you to give your gifts to the world with love, mastery, and grace.
